Stepping up in Chanel's range
The J12 arrived in 2000 as Chanel's argument that a ceramic sports watch could belong to the same conversation as the great Swiss divers — and two decades on, the house has the movement to match that ambition. The Calibre 12.1 is built at Kenissi, the manufacture Chanel co-owns, and carries COSC chronometer certification, meaning its rate has been independently verified across multiple positions and temperatures. Its oscillating weight is an openwork tungsten disc with a circular architectural form visible through the sapphire caseback — the kind of finishing detail that rewards a second look long after the novelty of the blue ceramic has settled. That blue is total: case, bracelet, dial and bezel ring share a single matte tone, broken only by rhodium-plated Arabic numerals and the steel of the unidirectional bezel and crown. The effect reads as considered rather than costume. At 38mm, the watch sits comfortably on a range of wrists without the slight self-consciousness that comes with the 41mm version, and the ceramic bracelet — assembled link by link and closing via a four-element deployant clasp — sits flush and cool against the skin in a way that a comparable steel construction simply does not.

Gabrielle Chanel opened her first shop in 1910 and spent the following decades removing things from women's clothing — corsetry, ornament, the assumption that formality required discomfort. The jersey suit, the little black dress and No. 5 came from that.
The watches are made in-house, not licensed. Chanel opened its own watch manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1993 and has since taken stakes in the movement maker Kenissi, giving it access to genuinely serious mechanics.
Two designs define the output. The Première of 1987 took its octagonal case from the stopper of the No. 5 bottle and its chain-and-leather bracelet from the quilted handbag. The J12 of 2000 was made almost entirely from high-tech ceramic at a time when almost nobody was doing it, and it changed what a fashion house's watch could be taken seriously as.
More recently the Monsieur and the Code Coco have carried in-house calibres, including a jumping-hour movement developed by Chanel itself.
The company remains privately owned by the Wertheimer family.
