Launched in 1993, Happy Sport was the watch that convinced a generation of women they could wear diamonds without formality — the five floating stones between the sapphire layers were not set, they moved, catching light at angles a fixed diamond never would. This reference continues that logic in Chopard's Lucent Steel, a proprietary alloy the manufacture developed as an alternative to conventional stainless steel, paired with 18k rose gold that the brand sources and certifies as ethical. The combination is not simply cosmetic: Lucent Steel polishes differently from standard steel, holding a lustre closer to precious metal. At 33mm the case sits neatly on a smaller wrist without reading as a dress watch that has shrunk to fit, and the guilloché at the dial centre gives the silver ground enough texture to hold interest in flat light. The in-house calibre carries a 42-hour reserve, and the exhibition caseback means the movement is visible — a reasonable thing to want when the manufacture went to the trouble of making it themselves. The rose gold crown, finished with a sapphire cabochon, is small but easy enough to locate; at 30m the watch is splash-proof rather than genuinely water-resistant, which is worth knowing.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

No. At 30m it will survive rain and handwashing, but not submersion of any kind.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 42 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as women's.

Cheapest place to buy

Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.

Who are Goldsmiths?

Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
