The Fenix 8 AMOLED is the direct successor to the Epix Pro Gen 2, and the change that matters most is the screen: Garmin has moved its flagship outdoor platform onto an AMOLED panel, which means maps, training metrics and navigation overlays render with a clarity that the previous MIP display could not approach, particularly indoors or in low light. At 51mm and 14.7mm thick, this is an unambiguously large watch — it sits proud on the wrist and makes no attempt to hide what it is. Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.

Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.
