The Venu 4 is the latest step in Garmin's Venu line, following the Venu 3 with a handful of purposeful additions: a built-in LED flashlight, circadian rhythm tracking refined beyond a simple sleep score, and a sports profile library expanded to over 80 activities. These are not headline features for their own sake — they reflect a watch that has moved further from fitness tracker territory into something a serious recreational athlete would reach for daily. At 45mm and only 12mm thick, the fibre-reinforced polymer case sits closer to the wrist than most devices carrying GPS, heart rate, altimeter and compass. The stainless steel bezel accent keeps it from reading as purely functional, and the brown leather strap with its quick-release pins means the watch can be swapped to the included silicone strap for training without tools. Up to 12 days between charges in standard smartwatch mode means the battery disappears as a consideration for most weeks.

Learn more about Garmin

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.

Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.

The fenix line established the template in 2012: a rugged multi-sport GPS watch with mapping, altimeter and week-long battery life. Forerunner covers running, Instinct the hard-wearing end, Venu the smartwatch end, and the MARQ line puts the same electronics in titanium and sapphire at Swiss prices.

Battery life is the differentiator. Where most smartwatches are measured in days, Garmin measures in weeks, and in solar-charging models sometimes in months.

These are instruments rather than heirlooms, and they date the way electronics date — but for anyone who actually trains, they are among the few watches on the market that earn their place.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Showering yes, swimming no. 50m covers splashes and brief immersion, but a swimming stroke generates well above the pressure that figure describes.

Will the glass scratch?

It can, over time. Mineral glass handles daily wear but will pick up fine scratches that sapphire would not.

Does it need a battery?

Yes. It is quartz, so expect a battery change every two to three years at a jeweller.

What size strap does it take?

22mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as unisex, and at this size it suits any wrist that takes the dimensions.

Cheapest place to buy

Both F.Hinds and Goldsmiths list it at £520, so choose on delivery and warranty rather than price.

Who are F.Hinds?

F.Hinds has been run by the same family since 1856 and is now in its fifth generation, with more than 115 shops across England and Wales. They are a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council and an Authorised Diamond Dealer.
