Stepping up in the same colour and case shape

The Instinct 3 marks a significant departure from its predecessor: where the Instinct 2 used a monochrome memory-in-pixel screen, this generation switches to a 1.3-inch AMOLED display, bringing full colour and considerably sharper rendering to a platform that had always prioritised endurance over visual richness. The reinforced bezel — polymer with aluminium integrated directly into its structure — is a redesign too, and the LED torch built into the top of the case is new, with adjustable intensities and a red mode that leaves night-adapted vision intact. At 59 grams the 50mm resin case is notably light for its footprint, and the lug-to-lug measurement matching the case diameter means it curves down onto the wrist rather than bridging across it — it wears closer and less cumbersome than the diameter alone suggests. The silicone strap uses QuickFit 26mm attachments, so swapping to a different band requires no tools and takes seconds. There is no luminous paint here; low-light legibility comes entirely from the display backlight and the physical torch. For most of what this watch is asked to do, that is the more practical arrangement.

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.

Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.
