Announced in early 2025, it arrives on the Fenix 8 AMOLED platform but with additions no Fenix carries: stealth mode, a kill switch, night vision goggle compatibility, a jumpmaster activity, and the Applied Ballistics Ultralight Solver for long-range shooting solutions in the field. These are not features borrowed from the outdoor category — they reflect a specific set of users and tasks. At 73g the 47mm case is notably lighter than the 51mm siblings, and lighter still than the Fenix 8 AMOLED at the same 47mm diameter, which the same sources put at 80g. The titanium and fibre construction accounts for that, and the 13.8mm profile wears closer to the wrist than most watches carrying this capability. The AMOLED panel at 454 × 454 pixels reads sharply in daylight in a way that the Solar variants' MIP displays simply do not, which matters when you are reading a firing solution or a waypoint under pressure. Up to 16 days in smartwatch mode, or 23 in battery saver — figures that hold without solar dependency, since this variant has none.

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.
Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.
The fenix line established the template in 2012: a rugged multi-sport GPS watch with mapping, altimeter and week-long battery life. Forerunner covers running, Instinct the hard-wearing end, Venu the smartwatch end, and the MARQ line puts the same electronics in titanium and sapphire at Swiss prices.
Battery life is the differentiator. Where most smartwatches are measured in days, Garmin measures in weeks, and in solar-charging models sometimes in months.
These are instruments rather than heirlooms, and they date the way electronics date — but for anyone who actually trains, they are among the few watches on the market that earn their place.
