Stepping up in Gerald Charles's range

Price range £15,960 to £76,920 across 17 Gerald Charles watches in stock.

The Maestro case is Gérald Genta's work — the irregular octagon that became one of the more recognisable shapes in Swiss watchmaking, and Gerald Charles has built the 3.0 generation around it with a chromatic conviction that suits it well. This reference takes emerald green across the sunburst dial, the vulcanized rubber strap, and the indices, so the colour reads as a considered position rather than an accent. At 39mm with an 11.5mm profile, this sits closer to a dress watch's geometry than most chronographs, and the three-register layout — small seconds at 3, thirty-minute counter at 9, twelve-hour counter at 6 — keeps the dial legible rather than crowded. The movement inside is a customised Vaucher base, running at 4Hz with twin barrels giving 50 hours of reserve, and the exhibition caseback is worth turning the watch over for: the hexagonal rotor is openworked, and the bridges carry colimaçon, Côtes de Genève, and perlage in combination. The rubber strap is worth a second look too — Clous de Paris pyramids on the face, the GC tapisserie on the reverse, which is the kind of detail that becomes apparent only once you've owned it for a while.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 50 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's, though at 39mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
