Gerald Charles reaches its twenty-fifth year with a watch that returns directly to 2005 — the year Gérald Genta drew the original Maestro — and rebuilds it in one hundred examples. The asymmetric curve at the bottom of the case, the house's most recognisable signature, sits exactly where Genta placed it. What is new is the dial: a genuine lapis lazuli disc at its centre, ringed by an outer frame worked through micro-chemical engraving, a process Gerald Charles calls meta-guillochage, which fragments light the way pavé stone would without using any. The anti-clockwise jumping hour, read through an arced aperture at twelve, was always the Maestro's defining mechanism, and it remains so here. At 42mm in grade 5 titanium the watch is lighter than it appears — 96 grams on the wrist — and the 11mm profile keeps it flatter than complication watches of comparable ambition typically manage. The Vaucher-produced Calibre 4.0 is visible through a sapphire caseback held by eight screws, its gold honeycomb rotor and Côtes de Genève decoration worth the brief inversion. The vulcanised rubber strap carries the same Clous de Paris texture as the crown and carries, unexpectedly, a faint vanilla scent — the kind of detail that belongs to the second week of ownership rather than the first.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 50 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's.
