Stepping up in Nomos Glashütte's range
The Club Sport Neomatik began as a question Nomos had not previously answered: could a watch built to Glashütte finishing standards go to 200 metres and still wear like the restrained, Bauhaus-adjacent pieces the brand is known for? The answer is the Club Sport line, and the Polar takes it in a particular direction — the galvanised blue dial with its sunburst texture sits somewhere between the brightness of a sport watch and the composure of an everyday piece, changing considerably under different light. At 37mm the case is modest, but the sweeping lugs carry it to 47.5mm lug-to-lug, so it fills the wrist without crowding it. The movement underneath, the DUW 3001, is a Glashütte-made automatic measuring just 3.2mm in height — which is why a watch rated to this depth sits at only 8.4mm thick and disappears under a cuff. The Arabic numerals are slightly recessed into the dial to hold a deeper charge of Super-LumiNova, a practical choice that reads as a design detail until you actually need it in low light. The exhibition caseback distinguishes this reference from its closed-back sibling, and the bracelet is worth examining: satin outer links against a polished centre, quick-change spring bars built in so the watch can move between bracelet and strap without tools or a visit to anyone.

Roland Schwertner, a photographer and computer technician from Düsseldorf with no watchmaking background, registered Nomos in Glashütte in January 1990 — two months after the Berlin Wall fell and before German reunification was complete. The town's watchmaking infrastructure had been state-owned for four decades and was suddenly available.
The design language was settled from the start and has barely moved: Bauhaus in the strict sense, drawing on the Dessau school's functionalism. Sans-serif numerals, no applied ornament, no unnecessary line, and dial layouts where every element earns its place. The Tangente, one of the first models, remains the flagship and looks the same today.
The technical ambition came later and was considerable for a company of its size. Nomos moved from modified Swiss ébauches to its own Alpha calibre, then to the DUW family, and in 2014 introduced the swing system — a proprietary escapement with an in-house hairspring, the component almost no independent manufacturer makes. Fewer than a dozen companies worldwide produce their own hairsprings.
The house is still independent, still based in a converted railway station in Glashütte, with design offices in Berlin. It occupies unusual territory: in-house movements and German finishing at prices closer to Swiss mid-range brands using bought-in calibres, which has made it the most common entry point into serious German watchmaking.
