Stepping up in Nomos Glashütte's range
The Club Sport line gave Nomos something they had not previously attempted: a serious water resistance rating built around the same Bauhaus-influenced restraint the brand applies to its dress watches. At 34mm across and 8.2mm deep, this is a diver's-rated watch that wears like a day watch — the kind of profile that disappears under a cuff while remaining rated to depths most owners will never reach. The DUW 3001 inside measures just 3.2mm tall, which is what makes that silhouette possible without compromise elsewhere. It is made in-house in Glashütte and carries the decorative traditions of that town: rhodium-plated surfaces, ribbing and perlage, a tempered blue balance spring in the NOMOS swing system. The caseback is sapphire, so none of that is hidden. A red warning ring on the screw-down crown tells you at a glance whether it is secured — a small functional detail that earns its place on a watch rated to this depth. The galvanised purple dial shifts considerably depending on the light it is in, reading closer to slate in shadow and revealing its full colour in direct light. White Arabic numerals and markers lume blue in the dark. The bracelet is scaled to the case, integrating neatly rather than overwhelming it, and the quick-change spring bars mean strap changes require no tools.

Roland Schwertner, a photographer and computer technician from Düsseldorf with no watchmaking background, registered Nomos in Glashütte in January 1990 — two months after the Berlin Wall fell and before German reunification was complete. The town's watchmaking infrastructure had been state-owned for four decades and was suddenly available.
The design language was settled from the start and has barely moved: Bauhaus in the strict sense, drawing on the Dessau school's functionalism. Sans-serif numerals, no applied ornament, no unnecessary line, and dial layouts where every element earns its place. The Tangente, one of the first models, remains the flagship and looks the same today.
The technical ambition came later and was considerable for a company of its size. Nomos moved from modified Swiss ébauches to its own Alpha calibre, then to the DUW family, and in 2014 introduced the swing system — a proprietary escapement with an in-house hairspring, the component almost no independent manufacturer makes. Fewer than a dozen companies worldwide produce their own hairsprings.
The house is still independent, still based in a converted railway station in Glashütte, with design offices in Berlin. It occupies unusual territory: in-house movements and German finishing at prices closer to Swiss mid-range brands using bought-in calibres, which has made it the most common entry point into serious German watchmaking.
