Stepping up in Seiko's range
Seiko made its first wristwatch in 1913 — the Laurel, a small dress piece that established the company as a maker of wristwatches rather than pocket watches. This Speedtimer marks 110 years from that moment, limited to 3,500 pieces, and the connection to the Laurel is not merely commemorative: the included brown calf leather strap with colour stitching is a deliberate echo of that original design, so the watch ships with two very different characters depending on which you choose. The 8A50 solar movement is the more interesting part of the technical story. It measures to 1/100th of a second, with dedicated sub-dials at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock handling the fractions before the main 60-minute counter takes over at 6 o'clock during stopwatch use — a four-register layout that keeps each function readable rather than stacking them. At 12.9mm thick for a 42mm solar chronograph, it wears with less bulk than the movement complexity might suggest, and a six-month power reserve means the solar dependency is theoretical for most wearers. The panda dial — white field, black sub-dials — is a classic chronograph arrangement that reads well in changing light, helped by the anti-reflective coating on the curved sapphire. The screw caseback carries both "Limited Edition" and the individual serial number, which on a 3,500-piece run is worth finding.
