William Wood builds its Valiant Collection around a single dedication: the people who run into burning buildings. Every material choice in the range connects back to that world, and on this watch the most literal example sits at the crown, where a small brass inset has been machined from a British firefighter's helmet that is at least a century old. It is the kind of detail that either matters to a buyer or does not, but it is there, verifiable, and it gives the watch a different quality of intention from a brand that simply chose green because green is having a moment. The dial is a sandwich construction, with cut-out indices that let the Super-LumiNova sub-layer read through as blocks of light rather than painted dots — a technique that gives the lume charge far more surface area and makes the watch considerably more legible in the dark than a conventional application. The seconds hand, with its reference to a fire bell chime, is the sort of thing you will not notice for a while and then will not unsee. Green rubber strap is cut from fire hose material; the quick-release fitting means swapping it takes seconds without tools. The open caseback shows a decorated rotor, and the screw-down crown keeps water out to 100 metres. At 15mm thick it is a meaningful presence on the wrist rather than a slim dress proposition, which suits the context entirely.
