Stepping up in Garmin's range

Price range £130 to £1,799 across 91 Garmin watches in stock.

The Lily 2 Active sits one step above the standard Lily 2 in Garmin's lineup, and the meaningful difference is onboard GPS — outdoor routes are mapped directly by the watch, without a phone in a pocket or armband. The 38mm round case is machined from anodised aluminium and weighs 29 grams, which means it disappears on the wrist during workouts and remains comfortable through the sleep tracking it is also designed to handle. Beneath the patterned lens, the hidden greyscale touchscreen wakes to a wrist raise or a tap, so the dial reads as jewellery at rest and as a display when needed. The quick-release strap can be swapped for any 14mm Garmin band without tools, which matters more on a watch worn continuously than on one taken off at the gym door. Battery life of up to nine days in standard use drops to nine hours with continuous GPS active — long enough for most events, honest about the trade-off.

Learn more about Garmin

Gary Burrell and Min Kao founded Garmin in 1989 — the name is a contraction of their first names — to build GPS receivers for aviation and marine use. Consumer navigation came later, and wearables later still.

Unlike most names in this directory that arrived from outside watchmaking, Garmin is not a licence. It designs and builds its own devices, writes its own software and runs its own satellite-positioning stack, which is why its watches do things Swiss houses do not attempt.

The fenix line established the template in 2012: a rugged multi-sport GPS watch with mapping, altimeter and week-long battery life. Forerunner covers running, Instinct the hard-wearing end, Venu the smartwatch end, and the MARQ line puts the same electronics in titanium and sapphire at Swiss prices.

Battery life is the differentiator. Where most smartwatches are measured in days, Garmin measures in weeks, and in solar-charging models sometimes in months.

These are instruments rather than heirlooms, and they date the way electronics date — but for anyone who actually trains, they are among the few watches on the market that earn their place.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Showering yes, swimming no. 50m covers splashes and brief immersion, but a swimming stroke generates well above the pressure that figure describes.

Will the glass scratch?

It can, over time. Mineral glass handles daily wear but will pick up fine scratches that sapphire would not.

Does it need a battery?

Yes. It is quartz, so expect a battery change every two to three years at a jeweller.

What size strap does it take?

14mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Will it fit my wrist?

Lug-to-lug is 38mm, which suits wrists from roughly 15cm (6 inches) upward.

Lug-to-lug decides fit more than case diameter does.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as women's, though at 38mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
