Stepping up in Girard-Perregaux's range
The Laureato line dates to 1975, when Girard-Perregaux introduced the octagonal bezel set on a round case — a geometry that was already making the same argument as the Royal Oak and the Nautilus, though Geneva rather than Geneva's neighbours. Fifty years on, the house has marked the anniversary with this commission for The Watches of Switzerland Group, limited to fifty pieces, each wearing a turquoise sunburst dial that has no direct equivalent in the standard catalogue. At 42mm the proportions are well-judged for a sports-elegant piece: broad enough to carry the integrated H-link bracelet without pinching, slim enough at under 11mm to move under a cuff without engineering around it. The dial texture — Clous de Paris hatching meeting a sunburst radiation — shifts between a muted teal and something closer to swimming-pool blue depending on the angle, and the date window at three o'clock is matched to the dial rather than inserted as an afterthought. The alternating polished and satin surfaces on the case do the same job the geometry does: the watch reads as one object, not as parts assembled. The exhibition caseback is worth the mention here because the 54-hour movement visible through it was built in-house, which is not a given at this address across the whole range. With only fifty made, the caseback engraving will almost certainly identify the edition.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch
Can I swim with it?
Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.
Will the glass scratch?
Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.
Does it need a battery?
No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.
How long does it run for when it's not worn?
About 54 hours fully wound — enough to survive a night off the wrist, but not a full weekend.
Is it a men's or women's watch?
Listed as men's.
Cheapest place to buy
Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.
Who are Goldsmiths?
Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
