Stepping up in Nomos Glashütte's range
The Club Sport Neomatik is Nomos doing something unusual for a Glashütte maker: a genuine diver's watch with serious depth rating, built around one of the most architecturally interesting movements in German watchmaking. The DUW 3001 is made entirely in-house, runs just 3.2mm tall, and uses Nomos's own swing system escapement in place of a lever sourced elsewhere — which is why the overall case comes in at 8.4mm despite the 200m rating. Most watches built to that depth are considerably thicker. The petrol dial earns its name. The PVD-treated sunburst surface shifts between deep teal and near-grey depending on the angle of light, and the recessed Arabic numerals packed with white Super-LumiNova hold their charge long enough to be useful rather than decorative. At 37mm with a 47.7mm lug-to-lug span, this sits flat and low across the wrist — slim enough for a cuff, proportioned to suit a range of wrist sizes without looking undersized on any of them. The bracelet mixes brushed outer links with polished centres and releases tool-free, so swapping to a strap takes seconds. The screw-down caseback and double-gasket crown are the kind of detail that reads as considered engineering rather than marketing, and the exhibition back means the movement is visible to anyone who looks.

Roland Schwertner, a photographer and computer technician from Düsseldorf with no watchmaking background, registered Nomos in Glashütte in January 1990 — two months after the Berlin Wall fell and before German reunification was complete. The town's watchmaking infrastructure had been state-owned for four decades and was suddenly available.
The design language was settled from the start and has barely moved: Bauhaus in the strict sense, drawing on the Dessau school's functionalism. Sans-serif numerals, no applied ornament, no unnecessary line, and dial layouts where every element earns its place. The Tangente, one of the first models, remains the flagship and looks the same today.
The technical ambition came later and was considerable for a company of its size. Nomos moved from modified Swiss ébauches to its own Alpha calibre, then to the DUW family, and in 2014 introduced the swing system — a proprietary escapement with an in-house hairspring, the component almost no independent manufacturer makes. Fewer than a dozen companies worldwide produce their own hairsprings.
The house is still independent, still based in a converted railway station in Glashütte, with design offices in Berlin. It occupies unusual territory: in-house movements and German finishing at prices closer to Swiss mid-range brands using bought-in calibres, which has made it the most common entry point into serious German watchmaking.
