Skagen SKW6914 Signatur Black IP Bracelet Watch - W06306

Ref. SKW6914

Skagen's Signatur line is built around a single discipline: remove everything that does not need to be there. The result here is a 40mm case that sits only 7mm from the wrist to the crystal — thin enough to disappear under a shirt cuff in a way that most steel-braceletted watches simply cannot manage. The all-black execution, case and bracelet together in PVD, reads as a coherent object rather than a collection of components. At 111 grams the bracelet has enough presence to feel considered on the wrist without pulling at it. The sandblasted matte dial absorbs light rather than reflecting it, which keeps the face calm in bright conditions and makes the slim indices read cleanly at a glance. The Seiko VJ21 inside is a Japanese quartz calibre chosen for low maintenance over any kind of horological interest — it runs on a single coin cell and is largely forgotten about, which is precisely what this kind of watch asks of its movement. The 20mm quick-release pins mean the bracelet can be swapped without tools if the owner ever wants a different look.

Learn more about Skagen

Skagen was founded in 1989 by Henrik and Charlotte Jorst, a Danish couple who had moved to New York and began importing watches designed in the Danish manner. The name is that of the town at the northern tip of Jutland where the North Sea and the Baltic meet, a place associated with a nineteenth-century painters' colony and with a particular quality of light.

The design follows Danish functionalism fairly strictly: thin cases, mesh bracelets, dials with as little on them as the function allows, and no ornament that is not doing something. The company was bought by the Fossil Group in 2012 and continues under the same design direction.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Showering yes, swimming no. 50m covers splashes and brief immersion, but a swimming stroke generates well above the pressure that figure describes.

Water resistance explained

Will the glass scratch?

It can, over time. Mineral glass handles daily wear but will pick up fine scratches that sapphire would not.

Sapphire, mineral and acrylic compared

Does it need a battery?

Yes. It is quartz, so expect a battery change every two to three years at a jeweller.

Quartz, automatic and solar compared

What size strap does it take?

20mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's, though at 40mm it sits in the range that suits anyone.
