This annual calendar makes that case more forcefully than anything else in the collection. The date travels as a retrograde hand along the outer rim of the dial, keeping the centre clear for the day, month and a moonphase accurate to both hemispheres across 122 years — an arrangement that requires only one correction per year, at the end of February, however many functions are running beneath it. At 11.1mm the case wears remarkably flat for a watch carrying this much mechanism, and the integrated bracelet means it lies against the wrist rather than sitting above it. The grey dial is not simply printed: a grain d'orge guilloché runs underneath the warm tone, visible when light crosses it at an angle, while the skeletonised delta hands keep the surface legible rather than decorated. The bezel is the one deliberate contrast — solid 950 platinum against the steel of the case, a material difference you feel in the hand before you see it. Through the caseback, the PF339 shows 359 components finished to a standard that most movements at this complication level keep hidden: Côtes de Genève stripes, circular graining, and a skeletonised rotor in 22-carat rose gold that turns visibly with the wrist. Michel Parmigiani spent two decades as a restorer, and it is the key to the company. He worked on the Maurice Sandoz collection — automata, singing birds, and complicated clocks of extraordinary rarity — and became one of the few people alive capable of rebuilding eighteenth and nineteenth century mechanisms whose makers left no documentation.
The Sandoz Family Foundation financed the founding of Parmigiani Fleurier in 1996 on the strength of that expertise, and continues to own it. Restoration work still runs alongside production, which is unusual and has direct consequences: the house has reverse-engineered historical complications few others have seen working.
The Sandoz backing also allowed something rarer than a brand — a supply chain. Parmigiani built or acquired Vaucher for movements, Atokalpa for escapement components including hairsprings, Elwin for precision parts, and Les Artisans Boîtiers for cases. Very few manufactures control all of that, and Vaucher supplies movements to other high-end houses.
The aesthetic signature is the teardrop lug, taken from historical pocket watch cases, and the Toric bezel with its knurled fluting derived from Greek architectural proportion.
The Tonda PF collection, launched in 2021, repositioned the house around understated integrated-bracelet watches and has been its most commercially successful line.
