The rattrapante — split-seconds in the traditional sense — has always served the stopwatch function: measuring elapsed time between two events. Parmigiani Fleurier turned that logic on its head with the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante, giving it a second minute hand that can be held at any position on demand, then snapped forward to rejoin the running hand. The effect is a complication that marks a moment you want to remember rather than an interval you want to measure — a subtle but genuine reinvention of a familiar mechanism. Two pushers manage it: one at 8 o'clock advances in five-minute steps, one at 10 o'clock in single minutes, both sitting flush with a case whose knurled 950 platinum bezel is the only obvious flourish against the satin and polished steel. At 10.7mm, the case wears noticeably flat for a watch carrying 271 components, and the sand grey dial with its hand-guilloché grain d'orge texture pulls differently under angled light than it does face-on — the pattern adds depth without demanding attention. The rose gold rattrapante hand is the one element that breaks from the otherwise rhodium-cooled palette, which makes it easy to read at a glance against the primary hands. Through the display caseback, the 22k rose gold micro-rotor confirms that the restraint on the dial is deliberate and consistent throughout.

Michel Parmigiani spent two decades as a restorer, and it is the key to the company. He worked on the Maurice Sandoz collection — automata, singing birds, and complicated clocks of extraordinary rarity — and became one of the few people alive capable of rebuilding eighteenth and nineteenth century mechanisms whose makers left no documentation.
The Sandoz Family Foundation financed the founding of Parmigiani Fleurier in 1996 on the strength of that expertise, and continues to own it. Restoration work still runs alongside production, which is unusual and has direct consequences: the house has reverse-engineered historical complications few others have seen working.
The Sandoz backing also allowed something rarer than a brand — a supply chain. Parmigiani built or acquired Vaucher for movements, Atokalpa for escapement components including hairsprings, Elwin for precision parts, and Les Artisans Boîtiers for cases. Very few manufactures control all of that, and Vaucher supplies movements to other high-end houses.
The aesthetic signature is the teardrop lug, taken from historical pocket watch cases, and the Toric bezel with its knurled fluting derived from Greek architectural proportion.
The Tonda PF collection, launched in 2021, repositioned the house around understated integrated-bracelet watches and has been its most commercially successful line.
