The Murph takes its name and its brief directly from Christopher Nolan's Interstellar: it is a faithful reconstruction of the watch worn by the film's central character, and Hamilton — long embedded in Hollywood's prop houses — produced it as a piece that works in both directions, as a screen-accurate object for those who care about the film and as a proper field watch for those who do not. The detail that rewards a close look is on the seconds hand: the lacquer decoration printed along it spells "Eureka" in Morse code, invisible at a glance and quietly there once you know it. Beyond that, the dial is a straightforward field watch proposition — beige Arabic numerals on black, cathedral hands, the kind of high-contrast legibility the format exists to provide. The H-10 movement inside is Hamilton's longest-running calibre, built on a proven Swiss base and wound to an 80-hour reserve, which means a watch taken off on Friday evening is still running Monday morning. The Nivachron balance spring adds magnetic resistance that most field watches of this type do not carry, and the exhibition caseback means the movement is on view — a sensible detail on a watch whose backstory is already worth examining.

Frequently asked questions, and things you should know about this watch

Can I swim with it?

Yes. At 100m it is rated for swimming and snorkelling, though not for diving.

Will the glass scratch?

Unlikely. Sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness and shrugs off everyday marking.

Does it need a battery?

No. It is automatic — the motion of your wrist winds it, and there is no cell to replace.

How long does it run for when it's not worn?

About 80 hours fully wound — enough to sit off the wrist over a weekend and still be running.

What size strap does it take?

22mm. Any strap of that width will fit, and on most modern watches quick-release bars make the swap a two-minute job with no tools.

Is it a men's or women's watch?

Listed as men's.

Cheapest place to buy

Goldsmiths is the only UK retailer we track stocking this reference, so there is nothing to compare it against today.

Who are Goldsmiths?

Goldsmiths has been selling watches in Britain since 1778 and is part of the Watches of Switzerland Group, which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. They are an authorised dealer, so a watch comes with the manufacturer’s own warranty.
