Stepping up in Oris's range
The Upcycle line began as an answer to a straightforward question: what happens to the ocean plastic that dive watches are meant to protect against. Oris's answer was to process recovered PET into dial material, and because the recycling produces random patterning, no two dials are identical. The 2024 generation of the Aquis brought a structural rethink alongside it — shorter lugs with a sharper downturn, tapering crown guards, and a case trimmed to 12.9mm, which for a watch rated to 300 metres is genuinely lean. At 41.5mm it wears closer to 38mm in feel, partly because the lugs hug the wrist rather than projecting from it, and partly because the midcase widens as it drops toward the wrist, keeping the profile low. The ceramic bezel insert is grey, the dial shifts with the light in a way pressed or painted dials do not, and the bracelet — redesigned for 2024 with broader brushed central links and a tapering profile — sits well even before you use the tool-free clasp extension, which adds roughly 14mm for days when a wetsuit is involved. The caseback carries a display window over the Calibre 733, a Sellita SW200-1 that is workmanlike rather than ornate, though the red Oris rotor is visible through it. It is not the movement the 43.5mm sibling can be specified with, but it is a sound, well-supported automatic that needs no particular coddling.
